19th Hole Playoff

Posted on: 1 March

Early drizzle failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the capacity field in the Corryong Open tournament on Sunday 23 February. The competition was fierce in all grades as the heat and humidity ramped up, none more so than the battle for the Open title, which was decided by a playoff.

Corryong course record holder, Wayne Dubois, has been the player to beat on the Hills Zone circuit recently and maintained that form to post a 77 off the stick and looked the likely winner. However, local hope Shane Bannon, pulled it together on the back nine to match Wayne and force a playoff.

The pair returned to the par four 18th tee for the decider. Wayne elected to go first after winning the honour, but his drive found its way into the rough. Shane failed to take advantage and followed suit with a wayward drive of his own. Both chipped into the fairway. Wayne’s next shot into the green rolled over the back lip. Shane again emulated his opponent’s shot to also run through the green.

The stage was set for a grandstand finish in front of the buzzing  50 crowd on the club deck, and when Shane’s chip finished short, the door was open. Wayne played a sweet shot to within 40cms. Unfortunately, Shane’s putt skimmed the hole. Wayne calmly potted his putt to claim the title.

Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to all the players who supported the event.
