The Battle of Handicap Pennant
Posted on: 25 November
WW111 took place on Sunday 24 November, under dry, hot conditions when four teams took on each other at the Henty Golf Course for the Handicap Pennant Semi Final. It’s probably worth mentioning that none of the teams were from a Sandgreen course, they weren’t playing for anyone’s freedom and it wasn’t State of Origin. but the fierceness and rivalry would have awed any digger.
Thanks go to the Henty members for their support and course preparation with special thanks to the ladies who made the salad rolls and the volunteers who manned a cart on the course to ensure players remained hydrated.
After a minor delay and discussion regarding players who were derelict in their duty and dared to be AWOL, the No 5 players for the Commercial Albury GC and Jindera GC teams teed off. They were followed in sequential succession until all the games were underway. Thurgoona GC and Howlong GC teams were called and when their No 5s teed off it was game on. Fortunately there were no firearms involved only balls and clubs, which potentially could have been used with murderous intent but tempers held and players showed restraint.
No skirmish (game) was conceded, and all combatants fought bravely against the flies, the warm conditions and each other. The 5s in the Thurgoona v Howlong match needed to play an additional hole to ensure a result. However there has been talk of PTSD among some players.
Congratulations to Commercial Albury d Jindera 3/2. The Thurgoona v Howlong result is under review pending a protest lodged by Howlong The final will be played on Sunday 1 December at Corowa Golf Course. Good luck to the teams that play. There has been a suggestion that an ambulance and medical personal be available to administer bandages and sedatives to the defeated.
